When thinking about moving out – be it out of your residence or office – the hardest part comes during packing your stuff. Packing is never the easiest of tasks. Packing doesn’t have to be a bothersome worry if you employ some handy tips, especially when it comes to packing fragile or valuable items. Often, the trickiest question is how to package the valuable goods well in order to protect them from damage. The best way to go about it would be to use a soft cushioning material that would protect the goods from physical damage.

There are a number of materials that can be used in padding. Some of them are detailed here:

Bubble Wrap
This is perhaps the most common material used in packaging. Bubble wrap consists of sheets that are made of plastic or nylon. The sheets have ‘bubbles’ of air on one side, hence the name. Bubble wrap is quite useful when it comes to packaging most household goods. Bubble wrap is quite flexible and as such can be wrapped around an item of almost any shape. Although it is not possible to recycle bubble wrap, it is most definitely possible to re-use it. So you can always fold your bubble wrap neatly and use it again.

Packing Foam
Foam is that whitish cushion stuff that electronics come in. Foam can be used as an excellent material to fill of that extra space at the side of the box. It is an excellent cushioning material because it isn’t always that the items you pack in the cartons will take up all the space. You can use foam to fill up the extra spaces and to provide padding at the top and bottom of the box in order to provide more cushioning.

Packing Peanuts
As the name suggests, packing peanuts are small pods that are used as fillers inside the packaging. Packing peanuts prevent the items inside the box from shifting around while moving. Peanuts are suitable for packaging less fragile items such as shoes and clothes. One good thing about peanuts is that they are totally environmentally friendly because they are made from cornstarch.

Newspapers and Tissue
If you have newspapers all over the house you can use them to package instead of letting them just add to clutter in the house. It is a cost-efficient method of padding your packing boxes. You could wad up the newspapers to provide a compact cushion. Newspapers have always been useful in packing valuable items such as delicate china, family heirlooms and antiques.

The materials given in this list are do-it-yourself kind of packaging, which is perfect for your self service move with a truck rental. Don’t forget the moving boxes either; be sure to check with your local retail store or someone nearby who has moved recently to find all the containers you need without having to spend a fortune on them.
