The summer moving season is upon us, and if you are considering renting a moving truck, you should consider a few things while packing. Not only can proper packing reduce the number of trips you must take between your old residence and the new, but it can also significantly reduce the costs of renting the truck in the first place, freeing up resources for more important things such as furnishings for your new home or maybe even a post-move mini-vacation. Let’s look at four tips to help you maximize the space in your moving van.

Assess the Situation

Before you even rent a truck, you should attempt to estimate the volume of possessions being moved. If you’re moving an entire house, but you have few pieces of large furniture and a limited amount of possessions, you may need to rent only a cargo van. But if you are transporting all of the goods from a three-bedroom apartment to a four-bedroom house, you will need larger, much larger. The largest moving vans available for rent are typically 24 to 26 feet long, about 8 feet wide, and about 8 feet tall. If you have enough items to completely furnish a large apartment or home, you will need all of this space and more.

Pack to Stack

While packing, make sure that your boxes are filled from top to bottom and from corner to corner. While this typically leads to a heavier box, it also creates a cube-like block of items that won’t be crushed easily from any direction. The more boxes you have, the better, but make sure that these boxes are not too large or too small. Miniature boxes, while cheaper, will only complicate your move and make it harder to find your items in the unpacking stage. Large boxes, if filled to their full capacity, can become so heavy that they are a danger to anyone attempting to lift them or move them into place. But regardless of size, make sure that all of your heavier boxes are stackable so that they can form the base of your possessions in the moving truck.

Utilize Every Available Inch

Once you get all of your items packed properly, begin stacking them inside the truck. Put the heaviest boxes at the front on the floor with lighter or equally heavy boxes above them. Continue stacking until you’ve reached 5 or so feet high and then begin stacking back towards the door. Repeat the same process so that all of the heavy items are on the bottom, with lighter boxes on the top. Then place the lightest boxes and bags on top of all the possessions in the moving van, and cap off the end of the space with a few pieces of furniture. Not only will furniture hold back the boxes to prevent shifting, but by placing them in the back, you will make sure that they are offloaded when you are least fatigued. And as a final point of caution, be sure to secure your looser items with straps or bungee cords to prevent them from sliding around or causing damage, and keep bookcases and other large items that are likely to tip wedged against boxes or the wall of the truck.

Store Some Stuff

If you can’t possibly fit all of your stuff into your new home, there are plenty of self storage units around that you can rent. Not only do these units offer safety and convenience, but some of them can be rented with heating installed to prevent moisture buildup in your goods. So don’t feel like you’ll be the only one, or that the only other solution is to throw out all your stuff. 6 Tips for Moving Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses are the bedding of choice for a superior night’s sleep. But when it comes to moving day, they can be a bit challenging. (And by “challenging”, we mean “droopy and heavy”.) Here are some tips on making the big day go smoothly.

1. Get chilly

If it’s possible in your climate, chill the mattress before moving it. This makes the mattress firmer and, thus, easier to move. In more northern areas, leave the window open overnight and move the mattress first thing in the morning. In warmer climates, try cranking the air conditioning and sleeping elsewhere the night before the move so that the mattress doesn’t absorbed your body heat from the night before.

2. Get a mattress bag

Mattress bags are available at movers and hardware stores. As you might expect, they keep your mattress from becoming soiled when you move it.

3. Get help

No one likes to move boxes alone, and this is even more true for memory foam mattresses. An average queen sized memory foam mattress weighs about 112lbs! Make sure that two people move memory foam mattresses larger than a twin size, and grab onto the non-memory foam parts for support. Your friends will appreciate hearing these tips beforehand!

4. Make sure you have a big enough vehicle

A small vehicle will not fit a queen size memory foam mattress — or any queen size mattress. Sorry. But very few of us really drive a small car on moving day. Now’s the time to find a friend with a pickup or hire a moving van.

5. Don’t worry too much about the foam

Because memory foam is so responsive to human touch, it’s easy to forget that memory foam is actually a pretty durable substance. You can fold it, put boxes on it, and pack it on its side, and it will be okay. That said, it should not be folded or strangely compressed for longer than two weeks at room temperature — so bear this in mind for longer moves. If you’re hiring a company for a longer move, make sure that the company knows how to move memory foam. Remind them in these cases that the foam cannot stay folded for longer than two weeks. If you’re passing through extreme climes (much warmer or much cooler) then it shouldn’t be folded for longer than a week.

6. Be generous with your helpers!

Moving a memory foam mattress is probably the hardest part of owning a memory foam mattress. Once you’ve moved the mattress into its new home, be sure to thank those that have helped you. Tip your movers generously. See if you can’t ingratiate yourself to your friends by exceeding the predictable beer and pizza (though do that, too).

It has a very functional interior, with a flat floor at the back of the cab, which creates more storage options. There is an open storage bin in the front armrest, and 170 degree opening rear doors. As far as towing is concerned, the 6-speed automatic transmission and the auto grade braking help it tow large, heavy trailers even down steep roads. It also has a towing capacity of 16,700 pounds, which ranks it among the best tow trucks out there, and it can be yours for $23,590.

Ford F-350 Super Duty

This rear-wheel-drive truck is equipped with a 6.2-liter, V8 engine, with 385 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque, and has a 6-speed automatic transmission as a standard option. It’s highly praised for its hauling abilities, with a payload capacity of 4,930 pounds, and a 14,000 pounds towing capacity. They will often show signs of stress throughout the process, so it is important that you get prepared as soon as you can. Pets need a little bit of extra time and effort to get through a move. It is not impossible to make it through relocation with your sanity still intact, but you need to get ready for what is coming well in advance. This is even more important if you have kids and pets.

Getting Ready

You need to prepare your pet by visiting the veterinarian. They will test your animal for any illnesses, and you will be able to get copies of all records. This is also your chance to make sure that the animal is up to date on all of their vaccines and will be legally allowed in their new home. Remember to ask your veterinarian for recommendations on a new doctor where you are moving to.

Pack your animals a travel box. This is an important part of your move because it will contain any important items or paperwork that you need to have with you. Moving Day
